What is the best formation? 4-3-3, 4-4-2 and the others compared

Updated on November 4, 2026

No formation is best for everyone. Each one shifts the weight between defence, midfield and attack, and the best is the one that makes use of the players you have. The game engine calculates the three areas from the positions on the pitch, so you can compare them with real numbers.

The 7 formations compared

The table shows how much each formation changes each area compared with a 4-4-2, for players of equal rating.

FormationDefenceMidfieldAttack
4-4-2basebasebase
4-3-3+4%+6%−10%
4-1-4-1+4%+6%−10%
4-2-3-1+5%+1%−7%
3-4-3+9%−1%−10%
3-5-2+12%−1%−15%
5-3-2+12%−1%−15%

Two results tend to surprise people: the 4-4-2 puts the most weight on attack, and the 3-4-3 protects more than it attacks.

When to use each one

  • 4-4-2: two strikers and two wingers, the biggest attacking weight in the game. Good when you are the favourite and need goals, and also the most exposed at the back.
  • 4-3-3 and 4-1-4-1: the strongest midfields, for keeping more of the ball. They pair well with possession.
  • 4-2-3-1: the middle ground, with two defensive midfielders protecting the defence and an attacking midfielder ahead of them. A good choice when you don't know where to start.
  • 3-4-3: three centre backs and two full backs close the team down, without giving up the two wingers.
  • 3-5-2 and 5-3-2: the most defensive. Use them to hold a result or to face someone much stronger, ideally on the counter.

What matters more than the formation

Playing someone out of position is costly. A player with no familiarity with a position can lose 30% of their rating there or more, far more than any gain in the table. On the lineup screen, an asterisk shows who is out of position. So the practical rule is simple: count how many good players you have in each position and choose the formation where they all fit.

Fitness comes right after that. A tired team performs worse in every area, and no formation makes up for it. Rotate the squad when there's a midweek match.

How to test

  1. In Lineup, change the formation and check whether any asterisk appeared.
  2. If needed, use auto lineup as a starting point and adjust from there.
  3. Play a few rounds before changing again: one defeat doesn't prove much.
  4. Match it with the style: a midfield-heavy formation with possession, a defensive formation with counter-attacks.
